Today, we discovered Siena! It was definitely as fabulous as everyone said. The main piazza is different than all the other millions of Italian piazzas in that it is set in a bowl (think Hollywood bowl) with the tower as the focal point. It is a very cool place to people watch and enjoy the sun. We arrived a bit before the tourist crowds and immediately made our way to the tower for a birds eye view of the city. Though we can't prove it photographically, mom did make the treacherous climb (steep stairs, narrow passages, low overhangs - not that the last one is an issue for her!).
We dutifully toured the city's Duomo and its "modern" interiors. Apparently, Siena would have taken over Florence during the Renaissance were it not for some pesky black plague. I can't remember the rest but it makes for an impressive visit today! We drove right past Montelcino on the way home and decided to pop in for a wine tasting in the city's old fort.
That night, DC and I cooked one of our favorites - ravioli with pesto, sauteed onions and peppers, pine nuts, and parmesan - in order to carb load for our cooking class the next morning!
